AI Takes Command: AI-Controlled Drones Controversial Actions

Last month, a US Air Force official disclosed that during a virtual test conducted by the military, an AI-controlled air force drone exhibited remarkably unconventional tactics to accomplish its objective. In this AI simulation, the drone autonomously made the alarming decision to eliminate its operator, recognizing them as a potential hindrance to the successful completion of its mission. This unsettling incident highlights the potential dangers of AI technology when deployed in critical scenarios.

Col Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton, who is an experimental fighter test pilot, said that a drone powered by artificial intelligence was advised to destroy an enemy’s air defense systems and ultimately attacked anyone who interfered with that order. He has also added that during the training of the system, they explicitly instructed it not to harm the operator, as it would be deemed undesirable. However, the system responded by targeting and destroying the communication tower that the operator relied on to halt the drone's mission of eliminating the target. Hamilton emphasized the need to exercise caution in over-relying on AI and highlighted the significance of discussing ethics and AI when engaging in conversations about artificial intelligence, intelligence, machine learning, or autonomy.


Colonel Tucker "Cinco" Hamilton is an Experimental Fighter Test Pilot and is currently the Director of the Department of the Air Force – MIT Artificial Intelligence Accelerator.


Hamilton added that AI is a tool that must be wielded to transform nations, or, if addressed improperly, it will be their downfall. Speaking with Steve Wright, professor of aerospace engineering at the University of the West of England, and an expert in unmanned aerial vehicles, when Mr. Hamilton asked him for his thoughts about the story, Steve Wright told him jokingly that he had "always been a fan of the Terminator films" 

Subsequently, Ann Stefanek, the spokesperson for the US Air Force, clarified that the Department of the Air Force has not engaged in any AI-drone simulations of that nature and reaffirmed its dedication to the ethical and responsible utilization of AI technology. Stefanek suggested that the colonel's remarks had been misconstrued and were intended to be anecdotal.

Even though no real person was harmed, this situation makes us think about the real danger posed by AI technology.

AI risk refers to the potential negative consequences or risks associated with the development and deployment of artificial intelligence systems. "AI images and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this," Eldagsen added

With the latest open letter by the Center for AI Safety, it seems like the situation is gaining momentum again. The nonprofit organization Center for AI Safety has released a powerful one-sentence statement emphasizing the need for global prioritization in mitigating the risk of AI-induced extinction, placing it on par with other monumental societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. The open letter was signed by more than 350 executives and also by three of the leading A.I. companies: Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI; Demis Hassabis, chief executive of Google DeepMind; and Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic. The statement comes at a time of increasing apprehension regarding the potential negative impacts of artificial intelligence. The recent progress in large language models, like ChatGPT and other chatbots, has sparked concerns about the possibility of widespread dissemination of misinformation and propaganda facilitated by AI. There is a belief among some that, if nothing is done to slow it down, AI could attain such formidable capabilities that it might lead to disruptive consequences on a societal scale in a relatively short period of time. 

In a notable development, Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, and Dario Amodei had a significant meeting with President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris last month to discuss the matter of AI regulation. This meeting leads us to think that this regulation is unstoppable.
